I disagree, he is and will always be my idol. Obviously the television shows would not authorise his programme if he actually had a huge chance of dying. He is a straight edge bloke that loves to get things from life and doesnt use things like fridges.

There are many REAL shows where its like that. Survivor Man for one is in real danger.

He still has a satellite phone on him to call back to a staff who monitor him at a distance, and they openly admit to extensively scouting out locations before Les does his work. Yes he does do all the filming and survival stuff himself without help, but he is still very well protected.

Bear (the sallest bear I’ve ever seen) is a copycat. Plain and simple….

Okay, so of course there will be SOME times where Bear’s crew will have to do some stuff for him because Bear can’t do it. Bear is only trying to show ONE way of how to do things if you were stuck in a jungle, or a forest or a desert or wherever it may be. He can’t show you everything, these are probably real handy life skills and who cares if Bear can’t do some of them, he’s trying to show you HOW to do it, even if it means pre-cutting holes in the ice, but giving you the BASIC idea of how its supposed to go. Bear has done a lot of dangerous things, even if he did cut holes in the ice to help him out of the FREEZING cold water, just getting into that water could be deadly. ANd its not fair to call him out on fakes, because he puts his life on the line to show us how to survive.
Besides, no matter how “realistic” TV shows pretend to be, EVERY television show has some fakeness in it and they could get help from their crew or other people.

Les Stroud and Bear Grylls are the worlds famous authorities on survival today. Dropped into the wilderness, Bear finds his way to safety climbing, swimming, and using his special forces experience to get to civilization. Les stays put and doesn’t attempt self rescue, which is probably safer. Both methods are great to know, and can help you stay alive, you might even enjoy the experience if you have their confidence and keep calm. Bear isn’t a fake and Les is alive not dead. People who say bad things about them dont know what their talking about!

The guy who left comment number 4 is an idiot. The only area where man vs wild is better than survivorman is the camera angles and action. Bear does alot of dumb shit (like backflips off waterfalls) because if he gets hurt his camera crew can save him. Survivorman is better in realism though. Les is an actual expert.

Comment by ndean
2010-07-19 19:39:25

Yeah because if you do a back flip and break your neck on a waterfall there’s a lot your camera crew can do. Bear is just a Ballsy guy who isn’t afraid to have a little fun.

Comment by matt

les has to carry around 50 pounds of camera gear and has to film everything himself there are a few instances where he has help though but its nothing compared to what bear grylls does and even if everything that bear grylls did was real most of the things he does are a good way to get yourself killed. he runs around all over the place which wastes your energy and when you have no food or water its really easy to get tired. also you could fall and break a leg of somthing which if your alone means youll probably die.

Bear is entertaining, but lots of his stuff is fake and dangerous. Any Boy Scout would have more survival sense than Bear in most situations. In most situations where you’d find yourself stranded in such a way that Bear does, well first thing is people will know you are there within a day. I’m talking about plane crashes or something, where it will be known that the plane went down in that area and people will be out looking for you soon. Bear usually gets to his locations by parachuting in from what I have seen, and you usually won’t find people just doing that into the middle of no where. If you are stranded because of getting lost or something during a hiking trip, most likely that hiking trip will have been planned. Usually family or friends will know a general area of where you are going to go hiking and when you are expected to be back. Many camping areas (national forests) will have some sort of log to try and keep track of people to just for safety reasons. Why Les is technically better, as he stays in one spot which in most situations is – by far – the safer, smarter, and best way to get rescue.

Not to mention Bear in his search for food. Sure, I’ve seen him catch bugs that simply come by his camp fire (which is smart), but lots of times he takes risks that most would deem unnecessary. Climbing up cliffs and back down again for a couple bird eggs. Climbing down a deep dried up well that he judged to be 50 feet to get some water when he could see trees in the distance. It was a neat climbing trick, but the effort he exerted going down and back up again seemed like it wasted far more water than he got from the mud he found. Not to mention in a real life situation the extreme likely hood of slipping, falling, breaking a bone, and being trapped down a dried up well to die (Bear himself nearly fell on the way back up, I’m just glad they didn’t edit out one of his crew actually helping to pull him up to safety)! It would have been much safer and smarter to head to the trees and hope to find a source of water there. He’s also climbed into an old wrecked ship (oddly after going one direction, climbing down a cliff, then walking back the other way before he even spotted the thing – lots of energy wasted there when, if you do move, it’s best to stick in one direction). With how rusty it was, even by the outside, he made a lot of risks swimming out to it, wasting energy to climb into it, moving around all the jagged and rusted metal of the ship which can be very dangerous if he got cut, just to get lucky to find a small squid to eat. Unless it looked like a recently shipwrecked ship which could of had some supplies worth snagging on it, once more anyone smart would not have risked getting injured and loosing all the water from your body in the exertion for a small scrap of food. And if you think food is that much worth it, remember WATER IS FAR MORE IMPORTANT! You can go perhaps a week or so without water, a good month with no food.

So yes, he does do some smart things. Like letting bugs come to his fire and eating them at times, or making markings to show which direction he was heading in (at least in the latest ep that just came out tonight). Still, most of what he does is just dangerous and stupid in not just a survival situation, but a just camping situation too.

Oh, and as for a bear, I grew up in the woods. Any kid who has grown up there or even has gone hunting (or boy scouts again) would know better than to run from a bear. Making loud noises (yelling, banging sticks/pots/etc) is the best choice to go with. Bears are more skiddish than aggressive, and will usually go away from such things. Otherwise, backing away slowly while making no sudden movements. As a last resort though, fetal position and lie incredibly still. Most bears live off fish and berries as their primary diet and are not land hunting animals.

Survivor man is boring and fakes all his long distance camera shots. So half the time hes just walking back and forth getting shots of himself walking. Bear just doesnt stop. He wants to get out of the shity situation. Les is to much of a fat fag to get up and move. Les shows you how to stay put and die after nobody finds you when you go missing. I find Survivorman to be amusingly pathetic. Over the few episodes I could stomach, I saw Les: 1. chuck rocks at doves (surprise! they flew away) 2. used an electric fence to pen in horses that got unnecessarily bitten by mosquitoes all night while he sat comfortably by a smoke fire 3. destroyed an acoustic guitar by duct taping it into a squirrel trap (don’t remember it catching squirrels). But then, what else would you expect from a canoe guide?

Les’ Off the Grid special should have been called “How to waste money building a house in the winter.” It was very informative if you use his mistakes as a bad example. Also, one of these 2 men in question are still married.

I’ve never once thought that either of these 2 tv shows were real or that these men were ever in any fatal danger. They simply would not air an episode like that on television, and it would be irresponsible for these men with children to endanger their lives for a tv show. People really seem to miss the point that Man vs. Wild is educational entertainment, not an endurance or starvation test. I don’t think Bear’s world records were faked were they?

I also like Ray Mears more than Les because his shows aren’t about how macho he is, and focuses on actual education.

It’s a little funny to read all these comments. It does make me feel like a low-life though. To all of you, Bear Grylls is where it’s at. He might not do everything that he shows in his videos, but as Patty Z. says, his task is to show us how to survive, not to survive everything possible out there. To those of you who used aggressive language, not classy. I’m not the biggest Les Straud fan, but I’m sure that he too puts a lot of effort into his show. Oh, Erick, I love your grammar. Willbur, technically, those are names, not words. That was funny though, a random interjection of an off-subject person. I give you props for that. For future Bear Gryll-dissers, do not offend him anymore. He’s my husband. Ok… no he’s not, but someday, someday. Alrighty, I’ll try to come back to this some other time.

I’ve recently gotten into both Man vs. Wild and Survivorman, so am just now discovering this page and ones like it. I love both, but personally prefer the style of Man vs. Wild. Regardless of how “real” certain aspects of the show are, it’s not meant to be completely believable (actually, no “reality” show should be believed). Sure, Bear gets help, but so does Les. They each have safety crews around (Les admitted it in an interview), which is understandable – they’re TV stars.

A major difference between the two shows is the general premise of each. Survivorman is about Les surviving for a week in dangerous or desolate places. Awesome, and he does an amazing job at it. However, Man vs. Wild is about more than that. It’s about escaping AND surviving. In Survivorman, Les doesn’t want to escape, whereas Bear’s goal is TO escape. Bear may get the crew to catch bunnies for him (he IS capable, he’s just on a deadline), but the point isn’t to wait around to watch him catch one himself, it’s to learn how to set the trap, skin, gut, and cook it. Personally, I wish Les would make his show more exciting. His is the CSPAN of survivor shows – Bear’s is CNN/FOX (whatever you prefer).

Regardless of the quality of their shows, I don’t doubt that both know what they’re talking about. I’d trust both of them equally if I was in a dangerous situation. Don’t doubt Bear’s credentials.

I recently watched an episode on survival in the Kalahari and pondered for about two seconds before I came to the conclusion that this was true modern day reality TV with a sad message sent to ignorant viewers globally on survival.
Who was triumphant in the race to the pole, Amundsen or Scott? and why?
Scott, the loser, was a great explorer but typical to his upbringing, a pompous British wannabe aristocrat, with grandeur thoughts of setting and sating the British population’s appetite that they ruled the world from north to south, east to west and hopefully, futuristically from the lowest to the highest points. Sad but true!!
Amundsen, the winner, on the other hand captivated the world by embracing the local population, learning from them, understanding their customs and traditions and local survival techniques!! Now that is real survival, learn from those who experience these climates and conditions on a daily basis and not from those who merely seek fame and glory with one hour on prime time television.
Our planet stretches far and wide with extremely diverse cultures and understandings of survival, these people in these places have lived for centuries without cameras, intervention from outsiders and survived!!! Let’s tell their stories of true survival on their terrain and learn from them but not how live off their land the way we know how. This will end in disaster for any ignorant adventure seeker.
Your techniques are reality from the western world but why not teach people how to really survive in unique situations they may find themselves in from all corners of the globe, this is true value~!
In conclusion, I am a South African who served in the SADF from 1986 – 1988 and survived the Kalahari and Kuiseb, not from my military training or yours, but from the local populations’ knowledge. The Bushmen of the Kalahari are of the greatest survivors on the planet living in extreme conditions for centuries. Who are we to tell others how to survive on their turf if all that is needed is a bit of insight into their own survival? I am a surviving amputee from my military service who now online challenges you to once again survive the Kalahari, this time with me Les, true survival the Bushman and Kalahari way. If you dare, contact me, its quite sad that all your websites do not allow me to post this challenge or criticism. Its quite ironic don’t you think? my mail, cell +38 097 707 0934.

alright folks, clearly both shows have to be somewhat staged, but not fake. These guys are both sickos enough to eat raw ANYTHING, but alot of the “life threatning” situations they’re in are staged only to show what to “probably” do in that kind of situation. For the people that blame others for dieing listening to this advice, your very pathetic to be so dependant on a tv show that you wouldn’t know how to survive on your own. Bear and Les are both tv celebrities and likely would not put themselves in a life endagering program, but at the same time they are there for a reason. I would like to see all the haters on this site eat some beetle worms and jump into frigid water, with or without the handles, then post back on this wall and chirp.

I agree that both men have very entertaining shows and provide very helpful advice. To say that either dont know what they’re talking about is completely false. I looking all these comments saying “I’m an outdoorsman, so i know Bears giving terrible advice” or “I was a boy scout so I know Bear would end up dying”.

Sorry who are you? Lets look at Bears accomplishments. He solo hiked the himalayan mountains. He served in the UK special forces. climbed mt. everest (age 23). not to mention the other countless himalayan mountains he climbed to prepare for it. he navigated the UK in a watercraft. he corssed the north atlantic ocean in an inflatable boat. He has coutless paramotoring ang freefalling records. took an inflatable boat throug the northwest passage. but yes, he does have his setbacks, like when he borke his shoulder indepentantly climbing aan antarctican mountain that had never been climbed before.

but yes, im sure you know more, bcause after all, your an ‘outdoorsman’ and bear is just a fraud.

I love watching Survivorman but I also enjoy watching documentaries. I’ve grown up camping and playing in the woods and waters near wear I live in Florida and I’ve learned a few key rules needed to survive. One of which is, don’t jump into a river from 20 feet unless you first check to see how deep it is. In one of the few episodes of Man vs Wild I’ve seen he does just this, not to mention the fact that the river was 50 degrees and had white water just down stream. In one of the next shots you can see a life vest outlined under his shirt. I’m not sure where that magically appeared from but I’m pretty sure he didn’t find it floating by. While Man vs Wild may be more entertaining if you follow his advice your likely to get yourself killed. Survivorman on the other hand is more of an educational film, following Les Strouds advice is the much wiser choice. Most people would think that being nineteen, I would prefer the more action based show but because of the downright stupid things Bear Grylls does I can not bear to watch his show.

The point is Bear Gryll’s marketed his show to be real and even acted like it in his interviews. Mildly entertaining if you can get past the fact that he is lying. Les can only do so much to entertain you because he doesn’t have writers telling him what to say and he can only attempt to use his own knowledge not the knowledge of many behind the camera experts.

Your comment is right on target. If Bear Grylls is trying to teach how to survive, then his survival techniques ought to be realistic, not merely entertaining. I admit that he is extremely fit physically and quite accomplished for climbing Mount Everest and serving as a soldier, but that’s not the same as surviving alone in the wilderness with no food or water at hand.

It is true that Les Stroud can be quite the let down when he ends a day without catching a single animal to eat, but that’s just reality. Even our oldest ancestors who had to survive in the wilderness weren’t always successful in their hunts for food, often going days without eating.

Although I still admire Bear Grylls as a very tough, energetic person, his physical prowess doesn’t make up for his lack of survival expertise. Whereas Bear Grylls has no “real” survival knowledge, Les Stroud is a qualified survival expert.

After reading some of the comments about Bear and Les, one thing sets these two apart… Les has a crew that KNOWS where he is at all times. Bear has a crew to film him at all time.

Since Les knows that he’ll be home in 7 days, he just needs to build a shelter and find food for that week. Most of his show, he doesn’t even build a good shelter aside from sleeping on rocks and dirt. Most of the time it looks like he hates filming himself. Wonder how many times he has to film walking away and coming back to look and do it over again until he finds the right footage. If he’s to be real, get really lost and see how many days his crew will find him. If you are really lost, no one is going to find you in 7 DAYS! No one is going to look for you for about 3 or 4 days. Telling people to sit for 7 days and someone will find you is recipe for death. Survivorman is nothing more than a week long camping trip in an exotic location without bringing any food and water. I would love a trip like that.

Bear maybe exaggerating the survival aspect for TV, but in reality, when you’re lost or stranded, you need to find a way out and quick. Knowing how to tell directions and how to build sturdy and safe shelter quickly can be a life saver. You have to be constantly on a move in the right direction. The most interesting part of Bears technique is watching him gather and build shelters quickly with what is around him. Knowing your environment before building your shelter is critical. For example, both did a show in the Amazon. Since the Amazon is full of wild animals, Bear built a high shelter to keep him safe from danger. Les on the other hands, tries to sleep in his boat first by trying to build a canopy on the boat which he fails. Les than ends up building a ground level shelter. It kept the rain off of him, but he’s sleeping close to all the creatures that could have made him lunch. It’s a amazing he didn’t film himself getting killed by a jaguar.

Having a crew film while doing a survival frees Bear up to concentrate on moving quickly in his show. Which makes it more interesting to watch. Les on the other hand, films himself and probably takes half a day to set the cameras up to film and refilm until he gets the right footage. He probably has to wait for the batters to charge up as well. His show is slow and you can see that in his show. Plus it makes it harder for him to move around from location to location. I would love to see Les gets out of quicksand or ice cold water while trying to film himself.

Both shows are made for TV and I’m sure both had protecting people watching them at all times. Just look at Steve Erwin. One little mistake during his filming and it took his life. I don’t think there’s any company that would be willing to allow someone to die while filming again.

Man Vs, Wild is entertaining to a degree. Bear and Steve Irwin are pretty animated in their gestures etc. If he really was in SAS, that’s almost like being a Navy Seal so he deserves some respect. I’m a photographer and can’t ‘prove’ fake or reall but my ‘gut’ tells me some of the footage is at least partially staged for the viewers…no biggy it’s all for TV so why make a big deal out of it? I don’t think I’d squeeze water out of elephant shit though. That’s going alittle too far.

This is hilarious. Bear knows more about survival than anyone questioning him, especially here. These idiots likely aren’t even aware of his credentials. Who cares if he has to stage a few things to get his point accross.

Even if some of the things he’s shown are likely too much for a normal person to remember or handle, every fact and trick provided are true. Some he knows, many he learns from locals before entering the situations. The retards saying that certain tricks will get people killed are giving too much credit to the retards that would improperly interpret and apply them.

Nothing he’s shown, if performed properly, would get someone killed. It’s just the average couch potato is too stupid to remember how to properly apply things… like the example from desert dave of the guy dying with the cactus in his hand. Nothing in that show beyond impressive physical feats would get someone killed. Lol “avid outdoorsman” or a man who has climbed Everest, the Himalayas, crossed the North Atlantic, served in special forces as a survival expert, and was named the youngest Chief Scout in history….hmmm. Bear would have said to follow the road derrrr.

Bear Grylls and all the other “survival show guys and gal” are top notch people who are providing a great service by creatively and entertainingly putting the “notion” of survival in tough environments in tough situations on our TV sets. Most of us will never be in the situations we see them in, and if we are it is likely you will not remember squat of what we watched unless we practiced it ourselves. Most critics are just that, and could not whip out their well equipped bugout bag or example of thier own expertise on many subtopics of survival. Don’t be a hater or a critic, these shows are NOT about the “presenters”, they are just there to make it entertaining. These shows are about survival demonstation, inspired thought on the many subtopics of survival, and hope you will pick up something that will keep you alive should poop hit the fan.

Stroud on the other hand is a real survivalist and knows what he is doing because he gets aid from experts on what SHOULD be eaten before he does his show. Grylls on the other hand jsut farts around to make it more dramatic for entertainment effect. I searched “man vs wild fake” on google because it obviously is.

I just watched the 1st episode of season one.
*He’s running towards a cliff edge (where a camera man happens to be conveniently standing).. “oh wow! I’m suddenly breathless and skidding to a halt at this cliff edge I didn’t see). Please.

* He gets all spooked from a grizzly 1st night.
Then jumps off a cliff to get away. (and either waits a couple hrs for his camera crew to catch up or they jump too with their gear). Which is a stupid move, risking injury.

* Then later he heads down white water with his rucksack for floatation, WITHOUT EVEN SURVEYING the river beforehand. *rolls eyes* yeah right. He’s either a complete fucking idiot and doesn’t care if he sees his wife/kid again, or .. The river was scouted ahead of time and he body-surfed a section they planned for him to.

* Oh, before climbing out of the water, magically making a fire (did he use a drill-bow again?), and passing out on sand with soaking wet clothes in an environment that goes down to freezing at night. Without worrying at all about a big bad grizzly fucking with him. Oh, but he had to jump off a cliff before because one might be after him ..

after he cooking food right next to where he was eating.
which is basically the dumbest thing you can do in bear country.

in the end? I think he’s athletic. He’s obviously got some survival experience. Aaaaaaand, he decided to bank on it by agreeing to star in a show that’s got almost nothing to do with real-life survival and everything to do with gullible idiots sitting in front of their TVs eating this shit up like sheep.

Does he have balls? Sure. There’s obviously some risk to alot of what he does.
But it’s painfully obvious it’s calculated and planned ahead of time.

Like how he accidentally gets hung up in a tree in the 1st episode after parachuting down. “Only my second time ever” he says.

I’m supposed to believe he just HAPPENED to get hung up in a tree, while his camera crew got down safe and sound and had time to set up and film?

Anyone defending him needs to hone their critical thinking skills :)

On an unrelated note, I’m part way thru “SAS survival guide” by Lofty Wiseman. Really useful information! Everything I’ve tried in the bush has worked.

Unlike cooking food next to your shelter in grizzly bear country (instead of a couple hundred meters away), running all night, jumping off a cliff with a pack on (that could potentially dislocate your shoulder), floating down a foreign section of river when an intelligent person doesn’t even canoe whitewater without scouting it first .. blah blah blah ..

Haha. Longest post ever! :)

His shows (“Survivour Man”) are as much put on as any… first of all, why would people be out in the places that he puts himself and not have even the basics of where they are,… ship wrecked on a boat… no knife….. no hooks… even tho it’s a boat used for fishing,, but poof… a pare of pliers shows up…. snomobile breaks down north of the Arctic circle…. no knife…… even the most ignorant person would have a knife or matches…lighter….. but lo and behold….poof another set of Pliers shows up…. not even a multi tool… which is very common with most people nowadays
I’ve lived close to nature all of my life and guided all types of people…. and guess what…… they will all have enough sense to have……. you guessed it, “a knife”, “matches” or a “lighter”, these types of shows are such a farce…. lets just make up the situation as we go to make it the most far out of all… through to the lame ending….. any inteligent outdoorsman will pick this show apart just like they would “Man vs Wild”
maybe have the basics and more would watch and enjoy rather that scoff at it

Great part of his show is indeed fake; some things are arranged, he most probably has a nice meal and a comfy bed awaiting for him after the shootings, but you cannot deny great part of it is actually true also. Like eating insects, drinking elephant dung, hunting and tearing the animals organs and more. He might not sleep in the carcass of a camel, but you gotta give him credit for lot of the stuff he does. I doubt anyone here would be able to eat something like a giant larva or a raw sheep heart.

What are people saying this is fake for. you people are just stupid. He isn’t doing this show to prove that he’s trying to get out or he’s actually surviving this on his own with no help. He’s going over common scenarios to help people in these situations. Most of them are presented to him so he can demonstrate the extremes and how to survive them. Otherwise he may do a show where nothing happens. So please this is a show of survival techniques not him doing it so shut up with it’s fake shit and grow some balls.

Idiots, ofcourse it’s not completely real
Did ya read the disclaimer at the start of the shows? He has help and they use upmost safety during filming to make sure everyone gets home alive, the idea isn’t see how i do survive, it’s this is options you have if you are in this situation.

Why would they have a show knowing full well someone is likely to die and would they film if he did? Least Bear runs around with minimal gear

Survivorman is even more fake if you want to go that route, the amount of times he’s “on his own” yet he has a camera that can mysteriously follow him around and do all sorts of crazy pan shots. Sure you could do that remotely but A) where’s he getting his power to charge the camera? B) Where’s his remote?. He usually has a host of gear to use.

as someone else said it should be Camperman not Survivor Man

and i might add Man Vs Wild was out first not the other way around.
and Bear Grylz is far more entertaining.

But cloearly the worst of the genre is Man Woman vs Wild, they don’t even try to hide that they are just ripping off Man Vs Wild episodes and the woman is a complete air head. Though she does have nice boobies.

Each episode takes about one week to ten days to shoot. Before each show the crew does about a week of reconnaissance, followed by Grylls doing a flyover of the terrain. Grylls then undergoes two days of intensive survival briefings. “I spend two days on location prior to dropping in – I go through all the safety and comms briefing as well as being briefed on local conditions, and flora and fauna by local rangers and a local bushcraft expert.” He is followed on the program by a cameraman and a sound engineer.[9] Directors oversee location filming and the final edit of each program. Season One directors included Dominic Stobart, Scott Tankard and Mark Westcott. Bear Grylls said, “I suppose to bear in mind that this is a worst-case scenario show, and therefore, of course things have to be planned. Otherwise, it would just be me in the wild and nothing happening, you know, ’cause textbook survival says you land, you get yourself comfortable, you wait for rescue, you don’t do anything. It would be a very boring show. The show is how to deal if you fall into quick sand, if you get attacked by an alligator, if you have to make a raft. I get a really good briefing before we go. I know there’s a big river there, there’s gonna be a great cliff climb there, there’s loads of snakes in those rocks, watch out for an alligator. So I do have a good idea of 80 percent of what’s gonna happen.” Furthermore, contrary to onscreen presentation, his movements are rarely from Point A to Point B: “We plan it, if we’re doing different locations, sometimes we’ll have to do a whole crew move and get a helicopter. Again, we’re talking huge distances sometimes. So we’ll use helis when we have to. They’ll go out three weeks ahead of me, and go, “That bit’s no good. Those rapids we thought are gonna be good are boring, but down there, it’s great.

“Episodes take about ten days to tape, explains Grylls: “The night stuff [shown on camera] is all done for real. But when I’m not filming I stay with the crew in some sort of base camp.” Episodes now clarify when Grylls gets support from his crew and when situations are staged, “We should have done that from the start,” he says. “The more you see, the more real it feels.”

Hey all I’m stationed in Korea. Recently saw a survivor show consisting of two guys, onw apparently walks barefoot all the time. I thought the show was pretty interesting. Is there so reality to that show or is it also staged? I apologize if there is another forum to discuss it but I don’t know the name of the show.

This is real every techniques used in man vs. Wild is real. Any person that was that really need to survive could with all the stuff he uses look at any survive book, military survive manual, the Internet and you will see this is a true way of surviving. Now I am not saying the show is real and they don’t help him. But anything you see on the show is very helpful in a survive situation!! This show is more of a teaching show then the real deal!! So learn!! And if you get in trouble and your life is in jeopatred this stuff will keep you alive!!

Bear stays in a hotel or in tents with the crew every night. He doesn’t need many tools during a day filming. They set up every shot, and take breaks when they want. If he’s hungry he eats. It’s not really surviving. He’s killing for ratings, and that’s it.I miss Les Stroud. Bear has nothing on him.

man vs. wild is supposed to be fake. he’s DEMONSTRATING survival techniques, not actually in real danger of the environment or animals. There’s fake everything to DEMONSTRATE how to, for instance, escape from fake lava, or survive a wildfire like he did in an episode, or even where to find water. He’s never in extreme conditions whereas one day you would hear that another guy will be on the show because Bear Grylls died of a snake bite or because he was swept into the current and starved at sea. And Survivorman is also somehow fake, and i know most of you guys will not be on my side on this. I haven’t seen it’s way of being fake on the show because I haven’t even watched a single episode of it, only because the first episode’s description on my DISH Network Guide was “Les survives with only a handful of cashews”, which i thought, and still think is very damn gay. Anyway, Man vs Wild has it’s ways of being fake as Survivorman also has it’s ways, either when it’s showing or on commercial break. Man vs. Wild is hands down the most viewed but more fake show because people don’t want to see some guy not in danger sitting on some tree for like a week. Case Closed.

it does not matter whether it is fake or not because as long as both men are teaching you how to survive and it works then you will eventually thank them for the info when you get in a real life or death none of you would have the balls to do any of the stuff they do like drink your own pee,eat scorpions, sleep nearly three feet from crocodile infested waters, crawl into an ice crevice to show us how to get out, stand perfectly still for hours upon hours at a seal breathing hole, walking for week in the kalahari desert facing heat stroke, poisonous snakes, and going insane. Also think about how these guys feel being away from their wife and kids not knowing if that day could be their last or that one false move could send them falling to their death never to see them, and do you have ANY PROOF??????NO DIDN’T THINK SO.well i think i made my point so stop criticizing them and calling them names when you don’t have proof of them being fake.

Everyone on this site needs to wake up. Bear Grylls is like 100X sweeter then survivorman. While i have massive respect for both of them Bear Grylls is way more entertaining to watch. Hes a bit unorthodox but anyone with a pulse can do what Les Stroud does. He literally walks through the woods for a week then leaves. I dont want to watch something on tv that i can do myslef. Bear Grylls does not only know his shit but hes fuckin insane. I would follow him into the woods over Les anyday. However, i would probably be killed because i couldnt do half the shit he does. Much respect to both guys regardless for doing what they do.

Ok bear still does all the things you see. He may place things such as dead animals there but its just to show you how you can use them. He trecks ough amazing terrain while helping his crew. All survivor man wants to do is complain about how much his situation sucks. Bear is optimistic which makes a better show and increases ones chance of survival if he she acts the same way

I bet everyone wishes they can do what bear does, go out in the wild with the latest in high end equipment such has fancy thermal jackets, $200 sunglasses, rugged $150 hiking boots, and so on. I mean, lets face it anyone can just go out and survive like Les Stroud, but why do that when we can all just get a production company to shovel a load of money in to the most expensive equipment out there and survive in style. And let us not forget that at the end of a day filled with surviving you get to cool your heels in a nice 5 star restaurant with all the luxuries, so ya, I think everyone would like to do what Bear does, but for most of us who don’t have money, I suppose we will have to survive the plain boring way, with only our clothes and basic supplies like Mr. Stroud.

umm Did you not just watch the video? Bear Grylls has his own show writer, his own director, and sleeps in a hotel. No he is not demonstrating how to survive. He is actually depicting emotions such as saying that his feet are extremely hot when in all actuality he is standing on stone-cold rock. Teaching people that when you step on rock your boots will catch on fire is incorrect. My brother John is a vulcanologist for the University of Washington. He knows what he actually happens when you stand on lava flows that are weeks old. Nothing. Active flows do NOT create smoke. Ever wondered why he tells you how gingerly to step on the rock, and then 5 minutes later he just jumps like a moron from a big rock on to a possible lava tube? Survivorman is ALONE for 7 days with basically nothing. All you people say he has a machete and stuff. Which would you rather have when alone in the wild? 50 Pounds of camera gear that you have to set up every 5 minutes, walk over, pick it up and then repeat the same action. OR would you rather have nothing but a 15 man camera crew that allows you to eat whenever you want and sleep in a bed in a giant tent or a hotel? No matter what you guys say> I have MANY more things to put into this conversation. Survivorman>Man vs. Wild

You guys seem to be missing the point here, these TV shows, are not here for education, they are for entertainment, they actually say in the begining not to attempt anything your self, you do see that part right? If you can pick up a few realistic tricks on the way, well then good for you. Unless you’re completely delusional, you would know what would be realistic based on your own capabilities. But again, these are TV shows, and they are both doing a great job. Bear and Les are both great, and their shows serve a different purpose, one is trying to get out, while another is trying to stay. Again, TV shows = entertainment!!! You want to learn something about survival? Take survival lessons, from instructors, meaning leave your house and go to a place that teaches you that, not your living room. Again, these are TV shows!!! Stop taking it so seriously.
Les keep it up!

Just give some time to it. What I don’t understand is why not make the 2 shows one which is a hell lot easier. Bear gets a partner, Les. Les gets a camera crew. IF only they just in the same company. Wait. Are they in the same or not???

why don’t you have a tv show then if you know so much? You do realise that while a lot is planned and put to Bear, rather then Bear stumbling upon a dangerous situation, he does rely on basically all of his information from local experts, wildlife rangers etc??
So seeing it is the experts job to know all about their region, and Bear has climbed Everest and crossed the Arctic, and flown ABOVE Everest, I think I would rather rely on his show then ‘DesertDave’.

Les is also pretty cool. Not quite as entertaining, but a lot more reliable in terms of survival. Don’t know why people can’t like both..

People, I going to show you the greatest survival technique in the world’s most dangerous place. Far dangerous than Les or Bear been before. Never attempt this before you read or watch me do it.
I am going to show you how to survive in the streets of Oakland, California for 7 days when your GPS failed. This happens a lot to many tourists or out of town visitors. I am going to show you how to protect your assets, yes your cameras like what Les uses, from being stolen. Where to hide or spend a night for protection and how to blend in with the locals, read for signs of free food by charities. How to travel long distance using the subway and speak like a local without British accent…
This is the first time any one has ever attempted.

In my next episode, i will show you how to survive a Black Friday rampage in Walmart… how to camp 7 days outside Walmart before that big day.

everyone just shut up about which one is staged or which one is more real. so what if the situation was staged, as long as the information is good. i personally think man vs wild is retarded and doesn’t teach logic in survival. survivor man however teaches the realistic best ways to really keep yourself alive/conserve energy instead of running around wasting it. i bet bear teaches some true stuff but a lot of it is just stupid decisions. Les on the other hand teaches the most logical things to do in a survival situation. dangerous/ ballsy or no survivor man is better for real survival. man vs wild is for entertainment.

None of you would survive in the places where Bear has gone.
Even with a camera crew or whatever, most of you would not dare to do the shit Bear does. His show is fake because it’s too dangerous to set him off without anything in the wild. He has a chance of dying without some help. He’s giving tips and showing how most situations in the wild can be handled. Health regulations wouldn’t allow Bear to go out without his items or camera crew. If bear died, the show would get sued. Basically, every show is fake in It’s on way. At least this show is entertaining and shows survival tips and a few fiasco’s. If Bear was really surviving, this show would be as boring as survivor man (Which is also fake)

so what your saying is everybody who finds themselves in a survival situation needs to have basically nothing, or they’re not really “surviving”? This is simple idiocy, if you leave with next to nothing, wander out into the middle of nowhere, then dont expect to return with your life.

Most people get lost while hiking (getting turned around or disorientated) or when a mode of transportation fails them. I never go hiking into dangerous terrain without the basics, and the basics should include at least a survival tin. Survival tins have nearly everything you need to get a very good start to getting yourself rescued, but beyond that it’s knowledge, experience, will power and fortitude that get you rescued.

Just because you rush headlong as fast as you can doesnt mean you’ll be any more successful at getting your self rescued. Sometimes a slow steady pace is best, and sometimes to sit, utilize your surroundings, and signal for rescue is best.

Does running down the wrong path get you any closer to an effective rescue than walking does? Key point a wrong path is a wrong path. Surviving isnt about engaging in Parkour and dazzling your viewers. People actually watch these shows and take them seriously. I think a lot of Bear’s “dazzling” stunts are stupid ways to procure mechanical injury quickly.

While like most i dont really find Les’ show to be the most exciting, when in terms of survival and the aid thereof, i find that running around like an acrobatic monkey is ridiculous when my life is in my own hands.

Also consider if you’re not by yourself and you have a small group with you. Your slowest member sets the pace, and a lot of his stunts are going to be well out of the realm of reality for a great many in your group (women, children, and elderly) I’m not sexist but most people in survival situations will not find themselves there willingly, and most will be at a serious disadvantage. There are sloppy, saggy men who are fearful and slow as well, but generally women, children, and elderly will set the pace and the path.

We are not animals and everyone’s survival should be in the mind of the leader as well as the collective group. Survival is in only portion about physicality; a very large factor is also mentality and group dynamics.

Check out Dual Survival for at least an inkling of mental stress between two very different methodologies of survival. Cody Lundin, and Dave Canterbury. It’s also just a show but i find it not only more entertaining than man vs wild, but also more realistic (to a degree) as well as informative.

Whether you agree with what i’ve said or not i dont really care. I know it’s true :)
