Wow…this guy is going to get someone killed. Seriously, what happens if someone crashes in africa, they have no water, and decide to suck the liquid out of fresh elephant dung because thats what Bear Grylls taught them?

I disagree, he is and will always be my idol. Obviously the television shows would not authorise his programme if he actually had a huge chance of dying. He is a straight edge bloke that loves to get things from life and doesnt use things like fridges.
peace

Okay, so of course there will be SOME times where Bear’s crew will have to do some stuff for him because Bear can’t do it. Bear is only trying to show ONE way of how to do things if you were stuck in a jungle, or a forest or a desert or wherever it may be. He can’t show you everything, these are probably real handy life skills and who cares if Bear can’t do some of them, he’s trying to show you HOW to do it, even if it means pre-cutting holes in the ice, but giving you the BASIC idea of how its supposed to go. Bear has done a lot of dangerous things, even if he did cut holes in the ice to help him out of the FREEZING cold water, just getting into that water could be deadly. ANd its not fair to call him out on fakes, because he puts his life on the line to show us how to survive.
Besides, no matter how “realistic” TV shows pretend to be, EVERY television show has some fakeness in it and they could get help from their crew or other people.

Bear Grylls does seem to know enough about survival. at least what he can read off a queue card but he is nothing compared to Les Stroud of Survivorman who Bear is obviously trying rip off. so to Bear i say fuck off you are a worthless money grubbing attention needing piece of shit. and you’ve got to be soo careful not to show that your a worthless piece of shit that can’t take care of yourself in a survival situation!

Les Stroud and Bear Grylls are the worlds famous authorities on survival today. Dropped into the wilderness, Bear finds his way to safety climbing, swimming, and using his special forces experience to get to civilization. Les stays put and doesn’t attempt self rescue, which is probably safer. Both methods are great to know, and can help you stay alive, you might even enjoy the experience if you have their confidence and keep calm. Bear isn’t a fake and Les is alive not dead. People who say bad things about them dont know what their talking about!

The guy who left comment number 4 is an idiot. The only area where man vs wild is better than survivorman is the camera angles and action. Bear does alot of dumb shit (like backflips off waterfalls) because if he gets hurt his camera crew can save him. Survivorman is better in realism though. Les is an actual expert.

les has to carry around 50 pounds of camera gear and has to film everything himself there are a few instances where he has help though but its nothing compared to what bear grylls does and even if everything that bear grylls did was real most of the things he does are a good way to get yourself killed. he runs around all over the place which wastes your energy and when you have no food or water its really easy to get tired. also you could fall and break a leg of somthing which if your alone means youll probably die.

Bear is entertaining, but lots of his stuff is fake and dangerous. Any Boy Scout would have more survival sense than Bear in most situations. In most situations where you’d find yourself stranded in such a way that Bear does, well first thing is people will know you are there within a day. I’m talking about plane crashes or something, where it will be known that the plane went down in that area and people will be out looking for you soon. Bear usually gets to his locations by parachuting in from what I have seen, and you usually won’t find people just doing that into the middle of no where. If you are stranded because of getting lost or something during a hiking trip, most likely that hiking trip will have been planned. Usually family or friends will know a general area of where you are going to go hiking and when you are expected to be back. Many camping areas (national forests) will have some sort of log to try and keep track of people to just for safety reasons. Why Les is technically better, as he stays in one spot which in most situations is – by far – the safer, smarter, and best way to get rescue.

Not to mention Bear in his search for food. Sure, I’ve seen him catch bugs that simply come by his camp fire (which is smart), but lots of times he takes risks that most would deem unnecessary. Climbing up cliffs and back down again for a couple bird eggs. Climbing down a deep dried up well that he judged to be 50 feet to get some water when he could see trees in the distance. It was a neat climbing trick, but the effort he exerted going down and back up again seemed like it wasted far more water than he got from the mud he found. Not to mention in a real life situation the extreme likely hood of slipping, falling, breaking a bone, and being trapped down a dried up well to die (Bear himself nearly fell on the way back up, I’m just glad they didn’t edit out one of his crew actually helping to pull him up to safety)! It would have been much safer and smarter to head to the trees and hope to find a source of water there. He’s also climbed into an old wrecked ship (oddly after going one direction, climbing down a cliff, then walking back the other way before he even spotted the thing – lots of energy wasted there when, if you do move, it’s best to stick in one direction). With how rusty it was, even by the outside, he made a lot of risks swimming out to it, wasting energy to climb into it, moving around all the jagged and rusted metal of the ship which can be very dangerous if he got cut, just to get lucky to find a small squid to eat. Unless it looked like a recently shipwrecked ship which could of had some supplies worth snagging on it, once more anyone smart would not have risked getting injured and loosing all the water from your body in the exertion for a small scrap of food. And if you think food is that much worth it, remember WATER IS FAR MORE IMPORTANT! You can go perhaps a week or so without water, a good month with no food.

So yes, he does do some smart things. Like letting bugs come to his fire and eating them at times, or making markings to show which direction he was heading in (at least in the latest ep that just came out tonight). Still, most of what he does is just dangerous and stupid in not just a survival situation, but a just camping situation too.

Oh, and as for a bear, I grew up in the woods. Any kid who has grown up there or even has gone hunting (or boy scouts again) would know better than to run from a bear. Making loud noises (yelling, banging sticks/pots/etc) is the best choice to go with. Bears are more skiddish than aggressive, and will usually go away from such things. Otherwise, backing away slowly while making no sudden movements. As a last resort though, fetal position and lie incredibly still. Most bears live off fish and berries as their primary diet and are not land hunting animals.

Wow Bear doesnt pay for the camera crew. Your an idiot. Bear isn’t even a producer. Hes just a host on a tv show. Man vs Wild is a million times better than survivor man. Survivor man is boring and fakes all his long distance camera shots. So half the time hes just walking back and forth getting shots of himself walking. Bear just doesnt stop. He wants to get out of the shity situation. Les is to much of a fat fag to get up and move. Les shows you how to stay put and die after nobody finds you when you go missing. Bear shows you how to find your own way home. So F les.

I find Survivorman to be amusingly pathetic. Over the few episodes I could stomach, I saw Les: 1. chuck rocks at doves (surprise! they flew away) 2. used an electric fence to pen in horses that got unnecessarily bitten by mosquitoes all night while he sat comfortably by a smoke fire 3. destroyed an acoustic guitar by duct taping it into a squirrel trap (don’t remember it catching squirrels). But then, what else would you expect from a canoe guide?

Les’ Off the Grid special should have been called “How to waste money building a house in the winter.” It was very informative if you use his mistakes as a bad example. Also, one of these 2 men in question are still married.

I’ve never once thought that either of these 2 tv shows were real or that these men were ever in any fatal danger. They simply would not air an episode like that on television, and it would be irresponsible for these men with children to endanger their lives for a tv show. People really seem to miss the point that Man vs. Wild is educational entertainment, not an endurance or starvation test. I don’t think Bear’s world records were faked were they?

I also like Ray Mears more than Les because his shows aren’t about how macho he is, and focuses on actual education.

It’s a little funny to read all these comments. It does make me feel like a low-life though. To all of you, Bear Grylls is where it’s at. He might not do everything that he shows in his videos, but as Patty Z. says, his task is to show us how to survive, not to survive everything possible out there. To those of you who used aggressive language, not classy. I’m not the biggest Les Straud fan, but I’m sure that he too puts a lot of effort into his show. Oh, Erick, I love your grammar. Willbur, technically, those are names, not words. That was funny though, a random interjection of an off-subject person. I give you props for that. For future Bear Gryll-dissers, do not offend him anymore. He’s my husband. Ok… no he’s not, but someday, someday. Alrighty, I’ll try to come back to this some other time.

All of these shows are staged, Steve Irwin’s show “Crocodile Hunter” would ‘plant’ snakes in areas if they weren’t found during the filming of his show.

most of the comments about people that like bear are from women. women have been sitting around the campfire having babies and making beaded necklaces for thousands of years and clearly don’t know anything about survival. they also clearly know nothing about making television though im sure they have been sitting on there fat ASSES watching it for 3 hours a day for there soft years. Do us a favor and stick to boiling lipton sidekicks and thawing hot dogs and let men post comments about survival since your choose clearly reflects your total lack of intellagent thinking.

Bear Grylls is a douchebag. Some fruity Limey jumping off of rocks and shouting “Whoo!” as he stands under a waterfall fifty feet from the state highway. I find him impossible to take seriously, like “Sherriff” John Bunnell, who at least seems to know he is a big joke. And Bear Grylls is a horrible name. Sounds like something you’d find at a Russian Home Depot.

I work in the Film/TV/Music Industry. Bear Grylls and Man vs Wild are NOT FAKE!!

Have any of you climbed Mount Everest at age 23’? Or were you in the UK Special Forces, SAS. You people only wish you could do a 10th of what Bear can do! You people that are disrespecting his talents are probably sitting around drinking a 12 pack with bag of Pork Rinds sitting on your beer bellies.

As for his camera crew they go thought a lot themselves to bring this amazing footage to you in a professional manner, going on location like they do is no walk in the park! I’m not going to disrespecting Survivorman but there is NO comparison to Bear Grylls Period!!!

I read a story last year in the about a guy that died from dehydration out Near Lake Mohave, AZ. he was off-roading and left his truck after it broke down (mistake 1). He left the main road and try to cut through the desert(mistake 2)They found his body with a cactus leaf in his hand. (doesn’t work, mistake 3) He was a regular watcher of Man Vs Wild.(mistake 4) I watched Bear’s show on desert survival and I could believe the amount of BS and false info I saw. knew then he would get someone killed. I am and avid outdoors men and have live in the northern AZ area for over ten years.

P.S. I find both of these shows humorous, but I figured there had to be some amount of staging going on.
